Letter Mm

Our first week back after the holiday was filled with Mm fun!  We painted mugs of hot cocoa with marbles, played with magnets, built with marshmallows and toothpicks, and created and wrote about melted snowmen.

We also enjoyed reading If You Give a Moose a Muffin.  We ate blueberry and chocolate chip muffins and graphed our favorites.

Fall Fun

Fall is such a fun time of year!  We have enjoyed a visit to the pumpkin patch, graphing Halloween candy, special color day snacks, and practicing for our Thanksgiving program.

Names, names, names!

We have been working on spelling our names, writing our names, sorting the letters in our names, and learning our friends’ names.  We begin the year by using all capital letters and work on forming those letters correctly.  We also encourage the children to start their letters at the top and move down.  For example, an E is a big line down, jump back to the top, a little line across the top, the middle, and the bottom.  O starts at the top, comes around like a C and then finishes back at the top.  I will be sending home more information on how you can help your child correctly form the letters in his name next week.

Reading Buddies

Mrs. Blizzard’s 3rd grade class came for the first time last Friday.  They will be our reading buddies this year.  Each week they will bring books to read to our class.

8 Ways to Raise a Reader

8 ways to raise a readerI came across this article today and thought it had some excellent points for parents of preschool children.  After snack each day, students are allowed to select books to "read" quietly until everyone is finished and it is time to move on to the next activity.  Many children find this difficult.  At school we model the proper way to hold a book and turn the pages.  We also model how to look carefully at the pictures, ask ourselves questions, and look for letters we may know.

At home I would encourage you to set aside 5 minutes each day and have your child "read" books quietly.  This will help to improve focus, observation skills, and independence.

Also, find time to read to your child each day.  Ask questions, make observations, and discuss the story afterward.  All of these will improve comprehension and help to create a life long learner and reader.

Thankful to be able to partner with you to educate and equip your children to change the world for God's glory!
